Ever since reading it sometime in high school, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" from Flannery O'Connor has been a favorite short story of mine. I've been preparing promotional material over the past month or two, and I did this illustration from the story as part of it. If you haven't read it, the story's full text is available free on line, and I would recommend checking it out. If you have, you will most likely recognize the character of the Misfit. This scene has always been one of the most poignant to me. I've always had a very distinct mental image of the Misfit's appearance, which I think I got about 85% true to my imagination in this drawing. I was lucky to find decent reference of Fred Gwynne, whose features come pretty close to how I pictured the Misfit. His face provided a good foundation to work from. As you can see, the parrots and blood spatter are absent from his shirt in the original line art. I drew the birds and blood separately in black ink on tracing paper over the original, then scanned them in and colored them digitally. I haven't settled on which color version I like the best yet (these are two of four-ish examples). I'll be making postcards to send out to art directors before Christmas, so if anybody wants one sent to them, let me know. I'd love to expand this out to 4-5 illustrations for the story sometime, but I've got a comic project with DV Brother Nate that is due to be brought to the next step, so the series will have to wait for the time being.
