Ink Drawings out of my Sketchbook

These are two of my favorite brush drawings out of my sketchbook done over the course of the last semester. The top is, of course, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, and the bottom is famed character actor Elisha Cook Jr. (recognizable to horror fans from the original "House on Haunted Hill" and "Blacula", and to noir fans from "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Killing") I have an idea for a flyer that might involve both of these drawings. Stay tuned to see if that happens!

3D Cadavro!

Some of you may remember my Cadavro (King of Western Terror) art from the end of last year. This is a maquette that was done for the same class. I've had it about 98% finished since the end of the class last semester, but it needed a few final touches before baking. The sculpey was pretty brittle after sitting unbaked for so long, but I was able to get a few things right. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. I want to do some more little monster busts. He's about 5" tall.

Iron Cross Adventure Preview!

Here's a sneak peek at the latest work. It's purty big at 22"x 30". Should be done soonish, and it will be for sale at that point, so start turning over couch cushions...

German Fair Poster

A week or so ago, my German Phonetics professor informed my class that we could receive extra credit for volunteering at the upcoming high school German fair to take place at BYU on the 13th. I need extra credit in that class ( I don't know an allophone from a monodipthong), so I signed up to judge the video section. I guess my professor thought I could be put to better use, so he told me he'd give me the same extra credit if I did a poster for it instead. The top is my hand drawn original (done in Prismacolor markers on bristol), the bottom is the slightly cleaned up version with temperature and background color adjustments in PS. The text reads "The German Language Festival" Jawohl!

Bismarck

This is a project I've been chipping away at for quite awhile, but mainly this past semester. My girlfriend is something of an authority on imperial Germany/Prussia, and has always been a fan of Otto von Bismarck. I haven't studied as much of the backstory, but I have always loved the Pickelhaube helmets from that era. I worked from multiple photos and paintings of ol' Otto for this piece, as well as contemporary photos of the spiky helmets. I'm about 90% sure I'm done with this one, but I might go back and touch one or two things up still. It's oils on masonite. Es lebe Bismarck!

Recent Figure Drawings

Here are some recent figure drawings from Bob Barrett's Advanced Life Drawing course that I'm taking right now. The powers that be at BYU, being somewhat puritanical in their perspectives on art and it's study, forbid my professors from using nude models in the figure drawing classes, but they are still very useful courses taught by very competent instructors. Bob Barrett is truly a master of the figure, and it has been really awesome to study under him. The drawings above are at varying stages of completion, and were done in sittings between 40 and 90 minutes in length. ( the sketch second from bottom was a 5 minute pose). I've still got much to learn when it comes to academic figure drawing, but I have learned a ton this semester.

Linocut Bookplates

I've recently learned linocut, and I couldn't be more stoked. The first thing I did was the skull/candle bookplate for my buddy Shaky for his recent birthday. Last week I did the inverted "ASE" bookplate for my personal library. I haven't got any printing ink yet, so I've been using oil paint (on the advice of a fellow illustrator), and it's working really well.  More projects will follow.
