Latest Coloring page

I drew this on the back of the box I packed Ang's Nostromo jacket in. I scanned it in in B&W so there would be a colorable version for her and all you loonies out there. I colored mine with Prismacolor markers and a red colored pencil. What will you use to color yours?

Some School stuff I never posted

Here are some projects I did in school last semester that I forgot to put on the blog at the time. They were both done in my Narrative Illustration class, taught by Bethanne Andersen. The Peter Pan cover represents an assignment consisting of 15 illustration comps, 1 final illustration, plus front and back covers. This was my favorite piece from the series. I played around with some coloring on it, I might post some of those experiments later. The Richard III poster went through several phases, with this being the final. I designed it with screenprinting in mind, hence the simple line work and color scheme. I wasn't trying to replicate the work of Coop or Kozik on this poster, but I did have their posters in mind when conceiving of the layout.

Ang's Birthday Present

My major side project over the past several months has been recreating the crew jacket of the Nostromo (from the original Alien movie) for Angela's birthday. It was pretty tough finding the correct jacket (vintage RAF mk3 Cold Weather jacket, in case you are looking) and getting it shipped over from the UK, but it was worth it. The patches are available online, and then I found some pink bias tape for the collar piping, and hand drew and cut a stencil for the back lettering, using stills from the film as reference. I also dyed the jacket with blue pigment to try to cut back on the olive of the green and get it a little darker and a little grayer. She liked it, so I was happy. 

Coloring Book Challenge!

Ang has been getting bored at work, so she asked me to start doing ink drawings for her to color when it's slow. Knowing that Gladiator is one of her favorite movies, I decided I'd have a go at Maximus. I think it's pretty clear I didn't stick the landing on the Russell Crowe likeness, but I have done worse, and I feel good about the inking and the overall presentation. I'll post Ang's colored versions as she gets them to me. I will also post colored pages from anyone else who prints this or any other of the coloring pages out and colors them, so get after it! Assuming anybody does this, the best one I recieve will win a real live sketch from me! Hop to it!

Progress on Iron Cross painting

                                                    

Seen above is the current progress on the painting hinted at a few posts ago. This one has been quite the project for me, the largest painting I've attempted to date. I'm doing it on something like 22" x 30" of Masonite, in oils. The painting is shooting to visually convey the mystique of the Iron Cross as a modern American amulet. That, and to look cool. I hope to be done with this one soon, as it's been the main work for almost two months (of varying diligence). With some finishing touches and visual clarification on certain areas, I should be posting a higher quality final image (that should make a little more sense) within a week or two. Apologies for the mixed color and lighting conditions throughout the photos. 

More Ink Drawing from my Sketchbook

To continue my recent trend of drawing figures from 60's culture in ink, here's one of Timothy Carey as God Hilliard in "The World's Greatest Sinner". Thanks to my pal Charlie, I recently have been lucky enough to see TWGS, Carey's bizarre, self-financed 1962 film. It's important to note that Holst's "Mars, Bringer of War" is playing in the scene I used as reference for this drawing. Keep that in mind as you look at the image. It makes a difference. 

Ink Drawings out of my Sketchbook

These are two of my favorite brush drawings out of my sketchbook done over the course of the last semester. The top is, of course, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, and the bottom is famed character actor Elisha Cook Jr. (recognizable to horror fans from the original "House on Haunted Hill" and "Blacula", and to noir fans from "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Killing") I have an idea for a flyer that might involve both of these drawings. Stay tuned to see if that happens!
